X-istential is an exhibition about artists that use chance to determine both the process and outcome of their work. Some allow chance to enter as an intuitive force triggering physical manifestations such as vigorously applied mark-making and color. Others introduce chance through the harnessing of a force of nature: i.e. employing elemental scarification or the marking of time as represented by impressions of the activity of animals, weather, or their own bodies. Thus, the work manifests itself as an archaeological record of physical outcomes that occur outside of the artists’ control, though set in motion by the initial parameters they create.

Overall, these works exhibit an immediacy that is reflective of an unadulterated reality. They are physical manifestations of the time, the place, the context of their creation and simultaneously that of the artist her or himself.
