DEMO Project

Excavators

March 11 – April 2, 2016

DEMO Project presents Excavators from New York-based artists Will Hutnick and Mark Joshua Epstein. Their exhibition engages the impending fate of DEMO Project: demolition.

The artists will present an Artist Talk at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery on Tuesday, March 8, from 6:00-7:00pm. The talk is free an open to the public, and is sponsored by the UIS Visual Arts Gallery.

An opening reception will take place for Excavators at DEMO Project on Friday, March 11, from 6:00-8:30pm. The exhibition will run from March 11 through Saturday, April 2. DEMO Project is open for the duration of the exhibit on Saturday afternoons from 1:00pm-4:00pm or by appointment.

Stark white walls, ceilings and architectural details are peeled away to reveal two distinct but co-existing visual vocabularies. The quiet layer of paint that envelops the space is penetrated by what’s behind. Whiteness gives way to exuberant pattern, collaged line, crisp geometry and organic marks. Glimpses of spray paint, stenciled geometric passages, textured puddles, energetic scrawl and stark lines are visible, evidencing traces of these “cave paintings” from time past. The demolition has begun, and as the house starts to destroy itself, it consumes its own protective coating to reveal a cacophony of abstraction.
