Trestle Projects is pleased to present Oracle, a two-person exhibition with Kati Gegenheimer and Charlotte Hallberg that illuminates in-between states of reality, phenomena and time.

Every human questions his or her own existence and searches for answers to the unknowable in many ways. Kati Gegenheimer and Charlotte Hallberg’s current interests lie in the impenetrable truths of our universe.  The spaces that they conjure seem to be without perceptible limits yet rooted in history and in the absolute.  They might be modern day mystics.

Gegenheimer’s approach is to “recall intimacy”, grasp love, memory and the present, and veer towards – and transcend – another dimension.  Her use and handling of materials is varied and experimental, yet consistently personal.  According to the artist, her work is dependent on a “reflexive memory slippage that allows the viewer to be in two places at once: an unabashedly intimate space where the exact intersection of the two [places] becomes somehow indecipherable.”  Just like individual experiences and memories, each painting continually points to another; each a piece of her arcane, mystifying jigsaw puzzle.

Hallberg also uses variety in media and shape as a way to break new ground, discover new objects, and explore space existing beyond the physical.  The forms uncovered in her work hint at familiar and/or recognizable things – constellations, prisms, matrices, portals – yet elude us in the end.  Hallberg’s latest body of work, a series of circular paintings, is inspired by the Nebra sky disc, an object associated with the Bronze Age that is said to be the oldest concrete depiction of the cosmos in the world.

Oracle is a reminder that our search for things beyond ourselves is endless and – more importantly – limitless.
